Newborn Session Details

Before the Session

Babies are most sleepy and photographed best during the first 14 days of life. I encourage you to schedule your session before baby arrives.  We will schedule 14 days out from your due date and adjust the date once baby arrives. A non-refundable deposit is required 10 days after I receive your online contract to ensure your scheduled date.

If you are nursing, I highly recommend to eat only bland foods and no dairy or caffeine 24-48 hours before your session.  The immature, uncomfortable nature of a baby’s digestive system is the biggest downfall of any newborn session.

Please feed baby 2-3 hour prior to your session and plan to feed again just before you leave your home.  If your drive is more than 15-30 minutes, please plan to give baby a full feeding once you arrive. Also, it is imperative to keep baby awake 2-3 solid hours before your scheduled time.  Try letting baby kick in only a diaper and interact with him/her, tickling toes, moving legs, etc. Even let baby fuss for a bit (no pacifiers). Toward the end of the 2-3 hours, give baby a bath.  This will help ease him/her into the lull of a good eating and a deep sleep to ensure those squishy, sleepy newborn poses!

During the Session

All newborn sessions take place in my studio outside of Monroe, IN.  The studio will be at least 80 degrees.  I will be dressed for a warm few hours and suggest you do the same!  I also encourage parents to bring a change of clothes in case there are any accidents during the shoot (it has happened!). Full sessions will last between 2-3 hours, and sometimes longer if baby is a light sleeper or is hungry.  Half sessions are no longer than 1.5 hours and mini sessions are no longer than 30 minutes.  The easiest way to ensure a sleepy baby is the willingness to nurse/bottle-feed off and on during the session.

If you can, bring the soothie pacifier the hospital sent home with you.  It’s the bendable, green/blue/orangish one and won’t leave marks on baby’s face. Even if you haven’t used one, please consider it just for the 3 hours (max) that I’m posing baby.

If siblings will be joining you for the session, please let me know in advance and I will try to have snacks and quiet kid activities available.  If sibling photos are requested, I recommend bringing children at the beginning and have an adult take them home or bring them toward the end.  Also, please know that I am more than happy to get a photo of mom an dad as well with baby as well.

After the Session

Editing generally takes 14-21 days.  I will email your gallery link, password and pin so your photos can be downloaded to your computer.  You will find an attachment with the print release for your personal use.  Anything posted online must mention Yellow Creek Photography.
